I looked at netbooks and small notebook computers for over a month, and I probably spent more time than is reasonable or sane on the entire project - simply because I wanted to be able to travel lighter than before, and have a computer that could still do most of what I need.

I looked at:

Lenovo U150
Lenovo S10
Acer Aspire One
Toshiba NB205
Dell Mini

I eventually bought the 1005PE because of it's battery life, the processor, and it's keyboard, and overlooked the mouse (which I have come to view as acceptable).

Things I Liked About the 1005PE:

1. The keyboard. It's much better than I expected. The keys bounce when I type, and I kind of like that. I wouldn't call it flex, and frankly I don't even understand what keyboard "flex" is anyway. I type fast and I write a great deal as part of my job, and if the keyboard were not comfortable, it would be the first reason to not buy the computer. They say the keyboard is 92% of a full size, and it feels that way or just a bit smaller. But it's easy to type on and I love that.

2. The processor. The computer has been able to do everything I wanted. I have watched videos, listened to music, plugged in an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and I've even run several programs at one time. I do a lot of spreadsheet work and I've not used it for any of that, but I am now confident that it could do that reasonably well as long as I didn't go crazy on the rows and columns.

One thing that surprised me is that I was told that I needed to be aware that I could not use the computer for more than one thing at a time, and that it couldn't be my main machine. But the fact is that I've been running two or three programs at once, and it is fine. I know it's not a business-class machine, but for my kind of business, it's doing great. I run trading software (Metatrader 4), gmail, music, and web browsers all at the same time.

I did add 1GB of RAM (for a total of 2GB) and that helps as well, I am sure.

3. The battery life. I love that the battery lasts as long as it does. It seems to be lasting 9+ hours for every charge.

What I didn't like so much

1. The mouse. The mouse pad has bumps on it and I didn't like that so much. I'd have preferred a little mouse nipple like I have on my Thinkpad X61. I hated that at first and got used to it. Don't get me wrong: the mouse on the 1005PE works fine, and I've gotten used to it. And it was worth getting over for all of the other features.

2. No built in 3G. I'd love to have been able to have a PCI Express card slot or a built in 3G modem. As it stands, I have a USB modem for Verizon's wireless broadband and it works great. It just adds one more piece of equipment that I have to carry around.

I looked at a ton of computers before I bought this one. I'm happy with what I got. Basically the worst things about this product is the speakers which is underneath the computer itself. Without headphones it at best can give you an impression of what going on but nothing more than barely getting by. I don't mind using headphones but have found a few applications I'd rather not like when multiple people are needing to listen.

Also this product all of a sudden will open a new browser or window or increase/decrease the size of the screen. Often this happens when typing fairly fast but I'm sure I'm not hitting a key in error, it's just a strange glitch.

Other than these faults the computer is great. The web cam and mic are surprising good. The memory is more than enough for most peoples uses. The laptop is super lite and easy to travel with. 6 to 8 hour battery life comes in handy all the time. I like the hot keys helping me from everything from increasing the volume to darkening the screen at a punch of a button.

If I'd have one advice buy the newer version of this computer. It has the speakers on the screen facing the user and has a bigger keyboard. I think it is the NC120. A friend of mine bought it and is super pleased.

I purchased the MSI U210 notebook in white on 12/13/2009. I considered purchasing the MSI L2100, which has the exact same hardware, but comes with Windows 7 pre-installed instead of Windows Vista. The L2100 is only available in black however, and after checking it out at the local Fry's I decided to order the white U210 from Amazon and upgrade it to Windows 7 later with the free upgrade program.

This is my first netbook size computer, and so far I have been extremely happy with the U210. It has become my main computer out of three including an older full-size Dell laptop and desktop.

Some pros/cons:

Performance - I was surprised how fast this computer is. For web browsing, using MS office, and watching downloaded .avi files it performs extremely well. As others have mentioned however, while streaming videos from YouTube and Hulu are very smooth when viewed in a window, there is a lot of stuttering in full-screen. I have ordered the Broadcom HD decoder card (~$20 from Ebay) that others have mentioned and will update this review when I have a chance to install and test it out. The WiFi range is excellent. I also think the sound quality is more than acceptable from a computer this size. The screen is beautiful and the webcam performs well. Another pro is that the computer stays pretty cool and is not uncomfortable when used on your lap. The computer also runs Vista very well, and as my first experience with this OS, I have had no problems.
UPDATE: I bought and installed the Broadcom HD decoder card in 5 minutes. It goes into the empty mini PCI slot. It seems to -have improved YouTube HD and the HDMI output is now very smooth (I never tested HDMI before the decoder card), however, I still cannot watch Hulu in high-res (480p) at full-screen without significant stuttering.

No Bluetooth - My U210 did not come with an internal Bluetooth antenna, even though it has a Bluetooth light, Bluetooth software loaded on the system, and "Bluetooth RFCOMM" listed in device manager. I suspect this is why some reviewers have stated that their U210 included Bluetooth, but mine did not and I would not expect other U210's from Amazon to include it. Apparently an internal Bluetooth antenna can be purchased from Ebay and plugged into the U210's motherboard for about $20.

Appearance and build quality - I like the white color and overall the computer looks very nice. As others have noted, the keyboard does have a small bulge centered over the letter "K" key. Other notebooks/netbooks I have seen do appear to have a more solid feel, but I'm guessing that the "flimsier" feel of the U210 is what helps to keep it's weight down, and there is no indication to me that my U210 won't last several years.

Windows 7 upgrade from MSI - I followed the instructions and ordered the upgrade the day I received my U210, but have not received anything from MSI yet. UPDATE: I received the upgrade DVD from Microsoft exactly 1 month after submitting the request to MSI, doing all the steps as fast as possible. It took MSI about 3 weeks to send the coupon, and Microsoft was very fast, sending the DVD to my house within a week. Windows 7 is running smooth.

I bought my first portable computer in 1996 for $2,000US (a Dell laptop with Intel P1-250MHz), then a second one in 2002 for $1,500US (a Dell inspiron laptop P4-2000MHz/512-ram), and now this is my third portable computer an Acer Aspire One AOP 531H with Intel Atom N270 (1,600MHz), 1Gb Ram, 160GB HDD, an integrated webcam, Bluetooth and WiFi for only $350US --> WoW!

I just purchased this last week on 11/9/09. It was on clearance, and it cost me around 350USD. So far I am very happy with the overall built, features, and performance. I think this little netbook is nicely built. I was a little bit concern with the 3-cell Li-On battery that came with it. But I was wrong and I found the battery provides ample online time for me. I was using it with Bluetooth and WiFi on, and it was running for maybe 1 hour and I still have 1.5hr left to go. I think the battery might last a little bit longer if I turn off Bluetooth and Wifi.

The only negatives comments I have for this netbook are: (1) The left side of the netbook becomes considerably hot after 45min~60min use. (2) The built of the adapter feels cheap and the DC cord might not last a long time.

It is simply a key code to enter as the program is already loaded on the computer. I have not had any problems so far with the computer or software. I will say that finding anything on ASUS's website requires a bit of searching. A few concerns about the side doors to access ports. They seem very cheap and forsee them breaking off with repeated use.

This is my first netbook so I suffered a learning curve about problems you can encounter. Read the specs very closely. First, this netbook only has 2 USB ports. This can present a problem if you purchase an external DVD/CD drive that is solely USB powered. A lot of these drives require 2 USB ports to operate, leaving you with no other port. You cannot power these devices off of a hub. One seriously misleading spec is that the netbook is upgradable to 2 GB. Well yes it is, but not by the user unless you are very techinically capable of computer repair and want to void your warranty. So don't buy that 2 GB memory upgrade that pops up as a suggested additional purchase from Amazon.

If I had this to do over, I think I would have gone with Acer or HP. Both seem to be a little sturdier in their construction. I spent a great deal of time looking for a netbook that would support the OS of my choice with minimal work for me - no messing with kexts and DellEFI or any of that. I also wanted as much of the original hardware to work under OS X as possible without having to install alternatives (i.e. wifi card). The S10 is ideal for modifying.

My review will discuss features both dependent and independent of the operating system.

The construction is high-quality compared to some netbooks I've used. The plastic doesn't creak or bend when you open the lid or pick it up. It only weighs 3 lbs., but it feels nicely solid in your hand. I've found the stock hard drive and RAM to be more than adequate, but if I wanted to upgrade, lenovo made the process easy, unlike other manufacturers who make you dig for it. The Atom processor has been described as "pokey," but I've noticed no sluggishness under OS X. With integrated graphics, streaming video like YouTube and Hulu isn't perfect, but it's on par with my 1.5 GHz G4 with 1.25 GB RAM: a little choppy, but watchable. The same could be said for any Atom netbook, and I imagine more RAM would help.

As with all netbooks, the design includes compromises to keep the form factor small and price low:

1) The S10's keyboard uses the standard layout - punctuation marks are all pretty much where you expect them to be - but the right-hand shift key is half-size to make room for the up-arrow, which I end up hitting a lot. With more practice, this wouldn't be an issue, and it's my only real complaint about the key layout. If it would really bug you, get the S10-2, which has a full-sized right-hand shift key.

2) Amazon ships this model with a 3-cell battery, and even on lowest brightness with wifi off, just typing, I haven't been able to squeeze more than 2:45 out of it. Again, the S10-2 might be a better option because it ships with a 6-cell battery (5.5 hours, easily). Either way, if you have a 6-cell battery, it will stick out a bit and prop the computer up at a slight angle.

3) This S10 only comes with two USB ports. For me, that's been plenty, but your mileage may vary. The S10-2 comes with three USB ports, but without the ExpressCard slot.

4) Under Snow Leopard, every component works except Ethernet and internal microphone. If you need it, the Apple USB-to-Ethernet adapter works great. I haven't needed a microphone yet, but if you Skype or iChat w/video, I imagine any USB mic that works with 10.6 will be fine. I prefer the S10 over the S10-2 here because the webcam ONLY works with iChat on the S10-2, not on Skype or Photobooth. The S10-2 also doesn't sleep, which gets VERY irritating after awhile. The S10 has no problems with sleep as long as you change a setting in System Prefs.

Bought this little laptop few weeks ago I like it very much.
It is so light, Love it.
I bring my laptop with me all the time so to have a light one was a must. I like the fact that also the power cord is light.
No issue with the smaller keyboard - I had a 14inches before and I didn't notice a huge difference. Only thing I miss is the "go to end of line" button.
It boots pretty fast which is nice.
The internet seems to be a bit slow to load but I haven't been able to figure out if it is a connection problem where I am or the pc.
I have to say that when you are using it you don't feel like the screen is small (they have this nice function of the scroll padd that allows you to zoom in and out of the page very very easily) but if you have a 14 inch nearby all of a sudden you feel like that screen is enormous :)
All in all I think it was a good buy for the price.

After one month of use I can say that it's a fairly decent netbook, when you consider its price. The quality is again fairly good, although I have a strange feeling that you could get more quality from Asus products (I'm a former Asus Eee user, who dumped an Eee for Acer's big screen). My model came with 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Windows Vista preinstalled and 3 cells battery, that provides up to 2.5 hours of intensive use.

You can summarize the pros and cons as follows:
Pros: excellent screen, large and bright, visible even in direct sunlight, very comfortable keyboard (with better ergonomics that Asus Eee), plenty of storage space for a netbook (250 GB)
Cons: weak Z520 processor(due to Intel's a restriction on the use of N270/N280 processors for netbooks with screens larger than 10"), unable to play HD content, no Bluetooth, potential for screen cracks with the lid closed when is very hot.

If you intend to keep it only for Internet use and some word processing while you're on the go, this netbook is by far superior to anything else on the market. The screen is simply gorgeous and allows you a very comfortable view of the web pages, without any excess scrolling, as on other netbooks, the 10 inchers included. Very thin and very light for its size, it will pass almost unnoticed in your handbag while you're traveling. Delivered with Windows Vista Home Basic, plenty of unneeded software and McAfee antivirus, the system is almost unusable. In order to get the most of its power, it needs a bit of tuning, including the removal of the terrible McAfee antivirus that literally kills the machine. With some Vista tweaking (including disabling of some useless services) the netbook runs fine, and definitely better than some older full size laptops. With its 2 GB of RAM and Windows 7 I'm sure that it would perform much better.
However, the worst disappointment was the netbook's inability to play any HD content, despite its 1366x768 screen. Simply any HD video (including the Youtube ones) is too much for the combination of Z520 processor / GMA500 graphics chipset - any HD video plays in the best case very choppy, although the normal MPEG2 (standard DVD content) would work fine. This situation is created by Intel's restrictions on the use of the more powerful Atom N series 1.6 GHz processors on netbooks with screens larger than 10", which led to the use of the slower Atom Z520 1.3 GHz.
The most worrisome issue of this netbook, as I found it on an Acer forum is its potential for screen cracks with the lid closed when is very hot. Later the user complaints were deleted by the site administrators but it seemed to be credible. Shortly, some users described situations when the closed the lids and left the netbooks to charge overnight to find the screens cracked in the morning due to the tensions induced in the LCD by the uneven heating of the screen. It seems a plausible issue, as I noticed that the keyboard becomes very warm during the usage, posibly because of the HDD or because of the battery charging. As a precautionary measure I never leave it charge over night with the lid completely closed and after use, if is very warm, i leave it cool for a while before closing it.

I just got one for my wife recently and it works greats (besides the XP home edition preloaded in the netbook). I've tested both my wireless N1 and wireless G routers and the netbook got excellent signal and connections to the internet. I saw there are a few reviews indicating the netbook is unable to connect. This may not be related to the netbook itself. It can be the router itself or the interferences in the house itself. Try to switch different wireless channel or get a signal booster (extended antenna) for the router will help. Be aware the netbook itself is mainly used for light browsing and the atom processor is definitely does not have sufficient power to process HD video steams or heavy-loaded java applications. So far I'm happy with the battery life and the light-weighted of the netbook itself and most importantly you will not feel the heat from the bottom of the netbook. The camera resolution is a bit low as well as the response. This could be a CMOS camera instead of the CCD.
So far I think the netbook delivers most of the features that a netbook should have.

Bought this little machine a few weeks ago. So far, it's exceeded my expectations. Boots quickly, battery lasts a long time, has a nice display screen, and much more.

I have only one very minor "issue" -- the internal speaker; it's pretty weak, although I somewhat expected this deficiency, given the units size and price.

On a side note, I've linked up my bluetooth headphones with it and that works well.

Here's the thing,

I bought this netbook, got it, and loved it! I love the side, appearance, and workability of it! I have had it for about two weeks now and untill today had no problem with it.

The problem started when I went to change the desktop background. It wouldn't let me so I went to the microseof twebsite and viewed a video on how to do it. I tried it and it didn't let me. So i went onto a microsoft help forum and researched my problem. I wasn't able to costomise and change my desktop background because windows 7 starter does not include that feature. I was so angry. I just perchased my own netbook with my own money and come to find out that I can't even constomise my own wallpaper! I would like microsoft to know that this is an incredibly stupid feature. Now I do not know what to do! Should I spend hundreds of dollars and purchase windows 7 and spend annother $30 on a CD attatchment(this netbook does not include one). Or should I just return the netbook and save my money to purchase a Mac? I am still deciding, but to those who are looking into purchasing a netbook with windows 7, i would remind yourself that you are limited and may have to buy the full version, which is VERY expensive.

I am a power computer user with up to date laptop and desktop (both Dell), but my wife needed a small & light weight computer for her retirement. I surprised her with a Lenovo. It comes with 1 GB of RAM and a 160 GB HD. The HD is large enough but after 6 months of slow and sluggish switching programs (MS Office to MS Word) we added a 2 GB RAM simm and that turned a good little computer into a great little computer. The battery does last and last, my wife gets 6 hours of untethered use and that is great. My high power laptop barley gets 90 minutes. My suggestion is go for the Lenovo.

One side note...when I purchased this I had MS Office (Small Business) that was allowed a 2nd installation. I wanted to put it in the Lenovo but with NO CD ROM, I was up against a wall. I called Lenovo and their (overseas) tech support wanted me to spend $150 to get help installing a new copy (it comes with an intro version of MS Office, but you need to pay for its installation). My solution was simple and easy and, the best part, there was no extra cost. I opened the CD ROM on my laptop by exploring the disk. I then copied all the files (Control A) to a Flash Drive. I took the Flash Drive to the Lenovo and installed as if it were a CD ROM. Have been using the system for about a week.

The battery life is unreal. With wi-fi on I get about 8+ hours, with wi-fi off the system says it can go 12+ hours and I believe it. recharge is fast as well.

The screen is very bright although i would have spent more to get 1280 wide rather than 1024. Screen reclines way back so its fine for just about any viewing position.

The body is plastic but feels very solid - no flex like I noticed in some of the ASUS netbooks.

Speakers are fine for everyday use. Haven't used the mic or speaker out jacks.

System is very light, and the charger is far lighter than I expected.

Trackpad is very responsive although I haven't mastered the zoom in and out gestures. The left and right click thing is a little stiff and takes some getting used to. I don't really like the keyboard style. It has teh flat keys with very little room in between and I'm having some problems gettign used to it rather than a standard PC keyboard (hence all the spelling mistakes in this review). that said the keys are very well arranged and none of teh common keys are hard to find or require complex ALT-FN-CTRL-SHIFT type combinations.

Keep in mind that this is a netbook, not a desktop replacement. The machine can get a little slow, usually if you are working in Internet explorer - this machine is going to have be seriously tryign out other, lighter weight, browsers.

this machine would get five stars except for the keyboard, which is a matter of personal typing style. I was really hoping to write a good review on the Acer AO532h-2309. I just got it yesterday and initially I loved it. The look and feel is great. I had no problems doing the initial set up. And proceeded to set up my email and other things on it.

I probably worked on it a total of 6 hours yesterday without any problems at all. Then today I decided to unplug it and take it with me for the first time. Well, I got to the car and tried to power it up on just the battery and the green power light came on but nothing appeared on the screen. I tried pushing the power button again and got nothing but the green light stayed on.

So I took it back in the house and plugged it back in to tried again with the cord. Still nothing. I unplugged it, took out the battery, waited a while then hooked it all back up to try again and still got only a blank screen.

So I got online to search for help (using my desk top of course). I found nothing of help on this particular Acer. But what I did find was several other Acer laptops experiencing the same problem. The site offered a solution which could be downloaded as a fix. But specifically said not to use it on any Acer models other than the one mentioned. So I couldn't risk trying on mine since it wasn't the model mentioned. What concerned me most was finding another independent forum that had several people writing in asking how to fix this problem and yet I still found no solutions posted. I did however find lots of complaints about the tech support at Acer.

So, I'm sending mine back. It's not worth the risk of this problem reoccurring after too much time has passed and I can no longer return it. I'm not sure what I will look for to replace it but it's not going to be an Acer.

It's too bad. I read lots of positive things about the Acer AO532h and had really hoped it would be a good netbook. Maybe my experience will just turn out to be a fluke. I sure hope so for everyone else's sake but I'm not willing to risk it again. So I'm going to look elsewhere for another netbook. I got this product two weeks ago, and it is working great! Battery life is 6-7 hours. Looks very cool and is indeed very stable. You can enlarge the view on the screen just with the touchpad, which is very convenient for a netbook with small screen.

One big advantage is the price. There are too much similar netbooks on this level. Some of them are more popular, bu they are really not that different. So the price become the advantage of this netbook.

This is a great little machine. It is what it is. (It is not an all out entertainment center.) For working on work projects, the HP Mini 110-103NR fits the bill perfectly. not having the patience to wait for the rumored apple tablet computer i decided to give the villiv a try as the specs were not bad. first off, the build quality seems to be pretty high. very sold, and somewhat heavy, feel to it. not the kind of device that you will hold in one hand while reading etc. definitely not a 'kindle'.

variety of ports is good, a full size usb port is included. only thing missing is ethernet. the real thing holding this device back is the software. in this age shipping a touch screen tablet computer with windows XP is just plain silly. xp is already outdated as it is, but try running it on such a tiny screen and its an exercise in frustration. sure, with the stylus you can hit keys pretty accurately but thats not what a touch screen should be about in 2009. i felt like a chicken pecking at corn. and of course, no gestures like zooming or scrolling as with an itouch. the qube interface is cute but hardly enough. you constantly have to jump to xp to have any real stuff done.

the main reason why i got this device was for its gps capability. unfortunately i could not get this to work. neither with ms streets and trips nor garmin mobile pc. not once did any software get a link to a satellite. probably just defective. but at least villiv should have included a utility for checking out the gps module. instead there was only one puny app to change the baud rate.

as for speed, the villiv not not disappoint in this area. pretty responsive for such a small machine. one word of caution, DO NOT GET THE 16GB VERSION. you are only left with something like 4GB for your own stuff. rest is used by the system (xp, hidden restore partition, etc). also do not password protect your account. you will not be able to logon from the welcome screen as the soft keyboard cannot be brought up at this point. (had to hook up a usb keyboard. image this happens while traveling. villiv, are you listening?)

I wanted something small and light with a long battery life, to carry on trips, but am finding myself instead carrying it around the house and to bed to check email, surf the web, etc. It set up effortlessly and maintains a better connection to our wireless than our ASUS EEE-PC netbook that has a hardwired connection! As many other reviewers have noted, the HP Instant Web program is a great way to quickly get on the web or email. I do recommend trying netbooks in person if at all possible- I originally was going to get a Toshiba (that was my first laptop, many years ago, which I loved, and Consumer Reports rates the Toshiba netbook highly) but I really didn't like the feel of the keypad (too squishy). This one has a satisfyingly solid feel. A few other things: it is the only netbook I could find with an anti-glare screen; it does seem to help. Do I think you should buy this? No, not until they fix whatever problems seem to be going on with it. I am not the only one complaining. Go to Acer's forums and see the 57 pages of complaints just about the freezing netbooks.

I am a power computer user with up to date laptop and desktop (both Dell), but my wife needed a small & light weight computer for her retirement. I surprised her with a Lenovo. It comes with 1 GB of RAM and a 160 GB HD. The HD is large enough but after 6 months of slow and sluggish switching programs (MS Office to MS Word) we added a 2 GB RAM simm and that turned a good little computer into a great little computer. The battery does last and last, my wife gets 6 hours of untethered use and that is great. My high power laptop barley gets 90 minutes. My suggestion is go for the Lenovo.

One side note...when I purchased this I had MS Office (Small Business) that was allowed a 2nd installation. I wanted to put it in the Lenovo but with NO CD ROM, I was up against a wall. I called Lenovo and their (overseas) tech support wanted me to spend $150 to get help installing a new copy (it comes with an intro version of MS Office, but you need to pay for its installation). My solution was simple and easy and, the best part, there was no extra cost. I opened the CD ROM on my laptop by exploring the disk. I then copied all the files (Control A) to a Flash Drive. I took the Flash Drive to the Lenovo and installed as if it were a CD ROM. This net book is missing 30gb.I got 1 for my wife and 1 for my daughter and there is only 220gb on both of them. We have 3 desktops, 1 laptop and now 2 net books. If you go to the properties on your hard drive, it will tell you the amount of gb you have, including partition,this one has only 220gb. HP got sued a few years back for exactly the same thing. I know enough about computers to see that gateway did not put the right hard drive into this model. No OS needs 30gb without a partition which would be still on the physical hard drive, and no proof of those 30gb can be found anywhere.It is a cool little toy, but unless you look for it, you will never know that you got taken. Got this netbook from wife for Xmas. In fact, I'm writing this review on it. As others have stated, ditch the junkware it comes preloaded with. I'll admit I hate Windows Vista, always avoid buggy new operating systems like Windows 7. XP is still the best most stable MS OS since NT 4. Mostly use it for internet browsing, some gaming. My all-time favorite game, Steel Panthers World at War runs perfectly on this box. (BTW- full game is a free download from [...]) Other games like Bejeweled 2, Warlords III, etc. run fine, too. This is with no RAM upgrade. Guitarpro 5 also runs perfectly. This means I can load tabs, learn new songs without lugging my Toshiba laptop around. Itunes, Mediamonkey run perfectly as well- Podcasts galore! What more could you ask from a sub $300 netbook? Wifi was a no-brainer to set up. Youtube vids run just fine. Admittedly, you're not going to run Call of Duty or other memory intensive games on it, but who cares? That's what a desktop is for. In short, it does everything I want it to, without being chained to a desk or lugging around a full laptop. I think of it as a "Laptop Lite" and for that purpose it is very nice indeed. Amazon also rocks! BB had this same netbook for only 70 dollars more and Amazon actually understands the meaning of *SERVICE*. LOL! Brick and mortar megastores are doomed. This machine is a great size, and I love the keyboard (including the backlighting). The screen resolution is poor considering the price of this laptop, but that's not what I was buying it for. I haven't tried the high def output yet, but I have a feeling it's great. Battery life is very good. I miss the fingerprint logon, as the facial recognition isn't nearly as functional, but not a deal-breaker.

I currently have an IBM T61 as my main laptop, just an FYI. OK, here is the thing; I'm not a tech expert, so I don't know about the technical pros and cons of this netbook. I just got it like a month ago, but I used it almost everyday. Here is what I experienced so far:

PROS
- Seriously, the design is amazing. I always wanted to have a Macbook, but couldn't afford one. It really feels like a Mac.
- It's the perfect size; not too small, not too big. I put it in a small bag without any problems when I was traveling.
- Very durable case

CONS
- Couple of screen freezings, had to restart. Shouldn't happen in a brand new net book.
- Like many netbooks, no DVD or CD drive so you can't install softwares easily
- Sometimes it's slow.
- If you aren't used to netbooks, you'll have to get used to the size of the keyboard. It doesn't take more than 2 days though.

So, I'm happy with it so far. I love everything Samsung manufactures. They're a green and sustainable company. Hence, I'm happy that my dollars aren't going to the dollar-greedy CEOs who doesn't care about the environment.

I put it under examination, it works great with outlook, explorer, skype and some office document of around 60 Mb at same time, the processor runs between 40-60% of capacity and 50% of physical memory. I am running VPN of my company or remote connection combine with other two programs and it run ok, so don't be afraid to get one, maybe not for daily use under heavy tasks but great for bussines traveling, it will achieve all your necessities.

The only thing that I don't like is that it is not built in mobile broadband as ad. in HP 5101 FM955UT video, so don't buy it thinking it is inside. I will wait for this interesting option in order to get a new one with the SIM slot ready to use.

I bought this netbook for school less than a month ago. It is pretty good and the battery life lasts long. I like the color, size, and the touch pad is also very sensitive. I bought this for my wife to take to meetings and kid's activities. I am very impressed. Machine feels very solid- I don't think broken hinges will ever be a problem. I ordered a 2 gig memory strip at the same time and installed it before I ever turned the machine on, so I can't comment on it with 1 gig, but with 2 gig, it is plenty fast. Wireless is excellent! I am seeing more networks than with any other machine I have ever used. Built-in Bluetooth works great with my Sony Z750a phone. Netflix streams without a hitch. Even with 3 users logged on, reponse doesn't slow. BTW, the memory I ordered was Transcend 2GB JetRam DDR2 667 SO-DIMM for Laptops (MFG Part #: JM667QSU-2G).

Just a couple of minor quibbles- I wish the Start key was on the left side. A USB port closer to the rear on the sides or on the rear would be really nice. In the middle is a little awkward. Documentation about the Samsung Recovery software that runs at startup is lacking. When you first start the machine, XP installs from a hidden 6GB partition. Part of the process is partitioning the rest of the space for the installation. It uses the 2nd partiton (that will be drive D:) to save a recovery image of the PC so you can revert the machine. It was confusing and since it gives you the option of setting the space as you see fit and warns you this can only be run once (changing your partitions deletes the data. yes- there are programs that can do this without data loss, but they aren't included). I ended up going with a 40GB C: and 100GB D: (+/-). After install of a few necessary apps, I have about 30 GB free on C:. D: will be for movies for the kids, games, music, and the backups of the C: drive. I also use Hamachi and CrashPlan+ for data security, so the Samsung Recovery may never get used.

Overall, I think this machine is going to be perfect. Small, light, fast, cool running, screen is very good- but a few distracting glares at times but nowhere near as bad as almost all Glossy screens. The LED backlighting is very even, and contrast is great. If I could get by with the lower resolution, I'd consider getting one (My laptop is 1600x1200!) I've had this machine now for about 5 or 6 months and I generally take it wherever I go. I can use the wifi at my mom's place to watch Youtube or Hulu without having to use one of their PCs. It also makes a great note-taker, because it suspends/resumes or hibernates/resumes quickly.

The machine has a nice big 160 GB hard drive, so I can pack all my valued data on it. This way, if my place gets burgled while I'm out, I still have my files. I personally would avoid units with flash storage because anything less than 40 GB is just too small.

i paid $258 for this one on Amazon back then, and I don't understand why the price has gone up so much. Ultra-portability is nice, but once it goes over $300 it isn't an impulse buy anymore.

The one aspect that kept me from giving it 5 stars is the fact that the case does not have any sort of neck/shoulder strap.
